The Southerner and the City: Broadway for the Holidays
Nov 29, 2012

It is that time of year when lots of people flock to New York City to take in the sights and sounds of the Christmas season. From the fabulously curated window displays up and down 5th Avenue, to the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, to the gigantic tree at Rockefeller Center, the Big Apple offers everything you could dream up to get you in the holiday spirit. Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing two Broadway shows that I think you should consider if you are coming this way for the holiday.

First, I saw Annie while it was still in previews at the Palace Theater. It was just as adorable as I remember it being many years ago when I saw it for the very first time. The little girls were adorable. Annie has some serious pipes and belts out all of the classic songs without missing a beat. Although, I kept waiting for her four legged friend, Sandy, to howl each time Annie hit one of those really high notes! But Sandy, the highly trained stage star, never flinched. Sandy gets a high five, or rather maybe a high paw, for her performance. I loved every minute of it and highly recommend the show.

Second, Corbin and I saw Elf The Musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theater. You may be familiar with the film that featured Will Ferrel. I have to say that I wasn’t that impressed. Specifically, I wasn’t that impressed with the story line. The cast was amazing including Buddy, the elf. The sets were colorful and the special effects were great. I just wasn’t that interested in the story. There was also some language in the show that I could have done with out, too. Corbin didn’t notice it because he was too busy trying to eat a foot long twisty lollipop! Check out the photos when you finish reading to get a look at his encounter with the sugary treat! If your kids are older than Corbin, who is 7, then the show might be a good one for them to see.

Thanks to The Moms, Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein, for the tickets to see the shows. The sponsors, The Children’s Place and Sierra Mist helped make both of these nights magical.

Just a reminder about seeing a Broadway show with a young child or kid. Go to the matinee if you can! The kids are not too tired and will enjoy it more. So will you!
