The Cardiologist's Wife Loves Wowbutter
Mar 26, 2014

From time to time I run across a product worth sharing because it is good, nutritious and reasonably priced. The other day I was in Wal Mart looking for my favorite peanut butter and I saw a new product (to me at least) - Wowbutter. The label claims it tastes just like peanut butter but is a toasted soy spread. It is 100% peanut free, gluten free, made in a 100% peanut, nut, gluten, dairy and egg free facility. I bought the jar because I was curious and took it home for a taste test.

My family loves peanuts and peanut butter but I know plenty of people who are highly allergic to peanuts, are gluten intolerant or have allergies to egg. It is extremely important to their health to be careful with the foods they eat. This can present challenges to those who prepare their food.

So far, I have had 5 people taste test this product. The majority agree that while it does taste different from peanut butter, it is certainly a good substitute. They did prefer peanut butter but keep in mind that all who tasted it grew up with and eat peanut butter regularly so they are prejudiced. The taste and smell are just like soy-nuts if you have ever had them. If you are looking a good protein source for sandwiches or smoothies, you’ll be interested in Wowbutter. Here’s how it stacks up nutritionally to peanut butter (I used Natural Jif for comparison).

(SEE CHART)

Just as with peanut butter, Wowbutter is high in fat so you’ll want to eat it in moderation. It does have a bit more fiber which always appeals to me. Many Americans don’t get near enough fiber in their diet.

I would use this product in anything I normally use peanut butter in: sandwiches, smoothies, snacks or in soups or sauces for main dishes. I do wonder how it would taste in cookies or other desserts made with peanut butter. Since it has the same amount of fat and the same consistency, I think it would be fine though the taste would be slightly different.

I found Wowbutter locally at the Wal Mart on Highland but I have not looked for it elsewhere. I don’t remember the exact price but it was in line with the peanut butter prices for the same size. If you are looking for a peanut butter substitute, give Wowbutter a try. I think you’ll like it.

I made two different batches of cookies with this the other day. Used it the same as I would peanut butter. I am deathly allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. The cookies were good but didn't taste peanut-y enough for some.
