From the Cardiologist's Wife - 'Never Give Up'
Sep 06, 2013
Are we ever too old to follow our dreams? Diana Nyad’s answer is no! Just a couple of days ago, she became the first person to swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Fl. without a shark cage. This was Diana’s fifth attempt and at age 64, she proved that age doesn’t have to limit our athletic endeavors. She swam 110 miles in just under 53 hours, at a pace of 51 strokes per minute. The first thing she told the cheering crowd as she emerged from the water was, “never give up." Her mantra during the grueling swim was “find a way." It kept her going through the long night. How can we apply Diana’s accomplishment to our own daily lives? What are your dreams? What would you like to accomplish? Your dreams don’t have to be as big or difficult as Diana’s but if they are important to you, find a way. How many things do you give up on when it becomes too hard? When I feel discouraged, I turn to inspirational people like Nyad to help me find my way. The definition of the word hero is: one who shows great courage, an object of extreme admiration and devotion. Finding a hero can help you through those difficult times when you are ready to give up. If you can actually meet and talk with your hero, if your hero can become your mentor, you are lucky. However, just reading about someone like Diana can also help you through the rough patches. I have my own bucket list of things I want to accomplish and like everyone else, I have insecurities and commitments that I must battle. Let your heroes lead the way to accomplishing your goals. Diana spoke about her own mental toughness that she says she didn’t have in her twenties. Other people who finally accomplish goals late in life agree, adding that they gain so much knowledge along the way. What goal have you yet to reach? Don’t allow your fears to keep you from doing something that you can look back on with pride. Don’t die with regrets for the things you didn’t do. Mental anguish can be just as crippling as a physical ailment, maybe even more so. Watching Nyad’s interview, I thought of a setback I had earlier this summer when my horse threw me, cracking a bone in my back. I’m not sure how far I’ll get towards achieving my goals with my horse, but I feel more determined to try. Don’t let the passing years convince you that it is too late. Nyad’s godson told her he would never again think of someone in their 60’s as old. Age is just a number. The most important thing you can do is to take care of your health so you can do the things you want to do. Poor health is a major factor in your ability to live the life you want; make good health a priority today. You can read more articles from the cardiologist's wife at http://cardiologistswife.com.
