Memorial Day marked the official start of summer for lots of people. School is out, vacations are planned and the long dog days of summer are ahead of us. At least part of that is true for us. You see, New York City public schools are not out for summer break until the end of June. So, we still have a few more weeks to endure getting ready for school and arriving on time!

Last weekend, while most New Yorkers split town, we settled into our apartment and hung out in the city. It was a great weekend. We had just returned from a warped speed, jam packed trip to Disney World. We needed some down time to recover from the over stimulating experience that is Disney! We left the apartment with plans to head down to SoHo and the Scholastic Store. Those plans changed quickly once we got downstairs to the lobby.

Our doorman informed us of a street fair a few blocks away on Broadway. Street fairs in New York City can be lots of fun. There are usually fun games for the kids, lots of food to eat, great drinks and of course shopping. Corbin spotted the big inflatable slide and bouncy house and we knew we were going to be at the fair for a while.

It’s an odd experience to get to stand in the middle of an otherwise insanely busy street like Broadway. Moments of panic hit and you feel like you should run to a sidewalk for fear of being run over by a cab. Only to realize you are surrounded by vendors selling corn on the cob and fresh squeezed lemonade.

We managed to pull Corbin away from the street fair, made our way downtown and hit the bookstore along with a few other favorite shops. And while most of Manhattan was out of town enjoying the beaches, we were left in a relatively quite city taking it all in at a leisurely pace. Quiet and leisurely are two adjectives I do not get to use often when describing the city that never sleeps! I highly recommend visiting New York City over a major holiday, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. You may just find that you’ve got the whole city to yourself!
