Four Years of Frugality - Spring Break on a Budget
Mar 01, 2012

Spring Break – it’s every college students’ goal to make it. It means the summer is almost here and they’re one step closer to being done with school. But for some, this often means sitting at home for a week with nothing to do, especially when the price of travel is getting outrageous even for those who have money out the wazoo. If you’re one of those who would love to be anywhere but a couch for the week, here are some alternatives and things to consider when packing up to go somewhere.

The biggest obstacle people run into these days when deciding where to go for their break is the cost of gas. It is crazy these days, but what most people don’t take into account when planning a trip is the cost of the return home. Gas prices may be high where you live, but what about where you are going? Do you really have the money to fill up your tank at nearly five bucks a gallon? So before you pack up all your buddies, decide who will be driving and how many people will be riding in your vehicle. Divide the cost of fuel there and back by who all will be riding and have everyone pay their share. It’s only fair to split the cost seeing as you may wind up arm-less and leg-less otherwise. This factor may also determine just how far away you decide to go. And splitting cost is for sure the way to go in all of your expenses from hotels to rentals and everything in between.

If long road trips just aren’t your thing, there are plenty of places closer – right in your backyard even – that make great destinations for a fun break from school.

For my Spring Break, will be packing up to visit Hot Springs for the “First Ever Ninth Annual World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade.” This is held every year on the shortest street in Downtown Hot Springs and draws quite a crowd. Past Grand Marshals have included Mario Lopez, Bo Derek, Mike Rowe as well as others. More information on the parade can be found HERE.

The rest of my “Spring Break on a Budget” will consist of kayaking, fishing and enjoying the Downtown scene. It helps that this is also my hometown, but there are so many great things here and in nearby areas that would rival any trip to the beach. Just consider all your options and plan accordingly.

Another great thing about Spring Break is the free time to get things done. Yes, it’s difficult and takes a considerable amount of discipline, but if you get your mind set on it, you can get so much done before you come back to school that the rest of the semester will be a breeze. Consider spending a day to get caught up on class readings or assignments or even going over what may be on your finals. It’s a chance to be creative with your time and your studying and get things done.

Whatever you do over your Spring Break, be responsible. Have fun, but be sure to get yourself back to campus in one piece.

See ya around campus!
