Southerner and the City - Welcome to the Beach Club
Aug 25, 2011

What are your summer plans? That is the big question New Yorkers asked me a lot. Lots of families leave for a big part of the summer. They may spend July and August in the Hamptons, upstate New York or leave all together as we did when we came back to Jonesboro. But for those who stay in the city during the summer, it is the weekends that are planned and fun-filled with short get away trips. Take this last weekend for example. My friend, Ariane, invited Corbin and I out to the beach.

Ever since we moved to New York City last year, I have heard many stories about beach clubs. I have listened to stories about cabanas, long days at the beach, and fun times for the kids. So this whole idea of a beach club totally fascinated me.

Ariane picked us up at our apartment and we drove out to Atlantic Beach, about an hour outside of the city. I wasn't sure what to expect. My trips to the beach have worked like this. You walk to the beach with all of your gear, stake out some chairs and an umbrella, order a drink and enjoy. Not the case at The Sands. It's a membership club for starters that sits on about 12 acres of beach front property. There are rows of cabanas with showers, cabana boys, clean restrooms, a pool, restaurant, bar, playground and tennis courts. Oh, and the pretty soft sand and water of the Atlantic Ocean.

I was really blown away by the place and how it is set up. I think it's the perfect way to enjoy the beach. You can have your own cabana with a shower, food, drink and entertainment for the kids. You can be as social as you want to be or hang out in your cabana with a good book and enjoy the day sans the sand, which is kind of how I like it. My preference is to be at the pool with access to and a view of the beach! I've traveled enough to know this about myself. Poolside service is also a plus, which is why the cabana boys make a day at The Sands so enjoyable. You can read more about the beach club at thesandsbeachclub.net.
