From the Cardiologist's Wife
Feb 02, 2011

Hello and welcome to The Cardiologist’s Wife, a blog about better health filled with exercise and fitness tips, better eating ideas, diets and of course, medical information.  My husband, Barry, is a cardiologist here in Jonesboro and we share a desire to promote better health in our community, especially as it relates to heart health.  So many people asked us how we stay in shape that I started blogging two years ago to share our lifestyle, eating and exercise habits and to hopefully inspire others.  Your good health is important; never take it for granted!

I will post every Wednesday so I hope you will check back to see what’s new. February is heart health awareness month, so my posts will all feature vital information concerning your heart.  If you would like to read more, check out my other blog at thecardiologistswife.blogspot.com.  I post the same recipes that I cook at that site as well as other information.

Heart disease is the number one reason people die in this country.  Cancer, accidents and strokes are in the top ten, but heart disease outranks them all.  It’s not just old folks who get heart disease.  My husband increasingly sees people who are younger than 50 with heart disease, even some in their 30s.  Sad to think some people may be middle aged at 20, 18 or even 16!  That what happens if you don’t take care of your body and you drop dead at age 45.

I’m hoping this blog will motivate some of you to start taking care of the only body you’ll ever have.  Doing so will also help prevent several other nasty diseases such as diabetes, cancer, or liver disease.  You really are in charge of your health and you can make a difference starting today.

I’ll end today’s post with the warning signs for a heart attack. They are somewhat different for men and women, so read both carefully:

*Chest pain or tightness, especially during exercise or exertion
*Shortness of breath
*Pain in the shoulder or neck or radiating down your arm
*Nausea or sweatiness

In addition to these symptoms, women may have the following symptoms or even no pain or symptoms at all:

*Unusual fatigue
*Sleep disturbances
*Anxiety
*Weakness or dizziness

If you experience these symptoms, you should get to an emergency room as soon as possible.  You will have a better outcome the faster you receive treatment.

Until next Wednesday,

Lisa Tedder
