Jonesboro Retail Report
Jan 13, 2011
Shopping is one of the biggest reasons people from all around Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri make the trek  to Jonesboro — and it is a great asset to the people who call the city home. Jonesboro has a variety of stores and shopping environments to fit every mood and budget — from quaint boutiques to expansive department store and everything between. Here are a few of the areas where larger concentrations of retailers are located in the city.
THE MALL AT TURTLE CREEKIn 2006, Jonesboro’s Mall at Turtle Creek, an 800,000-square-foot indoor shopping mall, opened its doors. Located conveniently at the corner of Stadium Boulevard and Highland Drive, the mall is one of the largest in the state and boasts approximately 80 specialty shops and department stores along with seven eateries.
Anchored by JCPenney, Target and Dillards, and subanchored by Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond and Best Buy, the mall offers a huge selection of varied merchandise in a variety of price ranges. In addition to the larger chain stores, a number of locally owned businesses call the mall home. A collection of specialty kiosks are located throughout the building and feature merchandise such as purses, jewelry and seasonal items. Hungry shoppers will also appreciate the expansive food court located in the mall’s center.
The Mall at Turtle Creek’s shopping environment is inviting and pleasant. Designed to evoke the spirit of historical “Main Street America,” friendly storefronts extend a cordial welcome to shoppers passing by. A contemporary freshness is added to the atmosphere through details like the mall’s central skylight. A children’s playground is located near the west entrance.
Additional attractions within the mall include a number of special events held throughout the year. Mall management partners with community organizations and leadership to host charity events, special shows and more. HISTORIC DOWNTOWN Shopping in downtown Jonesboro is an experience that incorporates interesting merchandise with good food, fun and culture. Situated in the northwest part of Jonesboro, downtown is made up of one-way streets flanked by refurbished historical buildings, trendy eateries and art galleries.
Stores found in the downtown district are characterized by a charming mixture of both old and new, making shopping here a unique experience. Main Street is the perfect place to go with friends, do a little shopping at specialty stores like Gearhead Outfitters or Rockstar Clothing and Guitars, then spend time at one of the fine eateries or explore one of the district’s galleries.
SOUTHWEST DRIVESouthwest Drive stores are an extension of downtown shopping. As Main Street fades into Southwest Drive, stores along this stretch become a contemporary version of the historic district. Many established, locally owned retailers call this area home. Stand-alone stores like Posey Peddler and Backbeat Music can be found on this retail saturated area. In addition, popular shopping centers such as Birchwood Square house stores like Froggie’s Full Sun Flowers and Gifts, Wenfield’s and Pagan’s Jewelry, giving treasure hunters plenty of options.
STADIUM BOULEVARD AND JOHNSON AVENUEStadium Boulevard has grown considerably since the opening of The Mall at Turtle Creek. Shopping venues along Stadium have increased considerably, making it one of the largest concentrations of strip malls in town.
Stadium Crossing, located just a few blocks north of the mall, is growing rapidly and now incorporates the following stores: Bedding Mart, Cooking Now/Lower Deck, Fabric Warehouse, Wilcoxson’s Kid’s Place, Sprint, Dream Home Gallery, Tucker’s Appliance Center and Westbrook’s Premiere Kitchen & Bath.
Directly across from Stadium Crossing is the Metro Centre, where a popular furniture store, I.O. Metro is housed. A small jaunt up Stadium leads shoppers to Johnson Avenue where yet another fine furniture store, Swank, is located in The Shoppes at Hilltop shopping center.
CARAWAY ROADFor many years, Caraway Road was the most traversed strip of shopping in Jonesboro, and it is still populated by some of the best stores in town. Shopping Centers like Caraway Plaza boast highly frequented stores such as Hastings, T.J. Maxx, Old Navy, Rack Room Shoes, Petco and more.
Two busy shopping centers at the corner of Caraway Road and Highland Drive are the Crossroads Shopping Center, where Pier 1 Imports and Office Max are located, and Highland Square Shopping Center, which includes K-Mart and Trees ‘n Trends among others.
AROUND TOWN In addition to the areas of retail mentioned above, there are many wonderful places to shop throughout the city of Jonesboro. From home improvement stores like Barton’s of Jonesboro, (3023 Browns Lane), to large consignment shops that sell clothing and home furnishings, there is something for every type of shopper in this retail mecca.
