The Cardiologist's Wife - Pedicure Tips!
Jul 27, 2016

It’s the middle of summer and your feet are showing! Have you taken care of them lately? A pedicure isn’t just something for women so they have pretty polish on their nails and spend an hour getting pampered. A good pedicure by a licensed professional can actually have health benefits, even for you guys, so listen up as Jonesboro nail technician Tommye McNamara gives some advice.

Tommye says that students must learn about various foot problems in cosmetology school and refer their clients to a doctor if they suspect a problem is brewing. She has had plenty of clients ask about their feet, particularly her diabetic clients. “A nail technician is the first step before the doctor” Tommye points out.

Keeping your toenails properly trimmed, something guys often neglect to do, prevents ingrown toenails which are incredibly painful. Your toenails should be trimmed straight across, just even with the tip of your toe. Rounding the edges or cutting them too short can lead to ingrown toenails but it is recommended to gently file the corners so they aren’t sharp.

Getting rid of dirt and bacteria with a nice foot soak can prevent nail fungus from growing and eliminate foot odor, which no one wants. The removal of excess dead skin cells through some type of exfoliation keeps calluses from forming but make sure it is done gently and calluses are not shaved off. Calluses are not only unattractive but can also lead to the formation of pressure points and blisters. Tommye says there is a fine line between the looks of nail trauma and fungus so a technician will ask about your activities. If you are a runner or tennis player, it is possible you have injured the nail bed, causing it to look white and lift up. A damaged nail will grow out if given a rest but fungus will get worse.

Diabetics must take good care of their feet as they are prone to nerve damage and reduced blood flow to their feet. A small cut or abrasion could lead to an infection, ulcer or even amputation. A good pedicurist can examine your feet each time and warn you of any potential problems before they become serious. Tommye also noted that cancer patients undergoing treatment often lose their nails so it is important to inform your technician if you have cancer so she can be more gentle and trim your nails short as is recommended.

Salons are inspected regularly by the Cosmetology section of the Arkansas Department of Health but a reputable technician will be happy to answer any questions you have concerning the way instruments are sanitized or her products. If you need to find a new nail technician, Tommye recommends calling one of the local licensed beauty supply stores as they know who does a good job and has a good reputation.

One last tip: you really shouldn't shave before a pedicure if you aren’t a regular shaver because you could pick up bacteria or the lotions used could irritate your skin. A pedicure should be a pleasant, relaxing experience so spend your money with someone nice who makes you feel good about yourself!
