The Arkansas State University Athletics Touchdown Club’s annual preseason banquet will be held Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. at the Convocation Center. Inspirational speaker Inky Johnson will serve as the keynote speaker.
Entering his second season as the Red Wolves’ head football coach, Blake Anderson will give an outlook on the 2015 season as well. In addition to the message from Johnson and outlook from Coach Anderson, the evening will include a dinner and live and silent auction. Matt Stolz, who is entering his 11th season handling radio play-by-play duties for A-State football games, will serve as the banquet’s emcee.
Johnson is a former cornerback for the University of Tennessee where in one game his life changed. With unique talents, Inky seemed destined for the National Football League, but his future was dramatically altered in the fourth quarter of a game against Air Force at Neyland Stadium.
Johnson suffered a severe injury that threated and ultimately altered his life, in a matter of seconds crushing the plans he had for a career in the NFL and beyond. While the injury left Johnson’s right arm completely paralyzed and ended his playing career, it did not discourage him.
After the injury, Johnson earned a master’s degree in sports psychology and now devotes much of his time to mentoring athletes and underprivileged youth.
The Red Wolves, coming off their fourth consecutive year with a bowl-game appearance, reported for fall camp Aug. 5 and will open their 2015 campaign Sept. 5 at No. 10 USC. Their home opener is set for a week later (Sept. 12), when they will host defending SEC East champion Missouri at Centennial Bank Stadium. A-State returns 53 lettermen, including 11 preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selections that are the most in the league.
