Sleep Disorders Center

Department and Evaluation Procedures

  • Evaluation procedures during sleep studies in the Sleep Disorders Center involve continuous monitoring of sleep patterns by:
    • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
    • Electromyogram (EMG)
    • Electrooculogram (EOG)
    • Oxygen Saturation
  • Cardiac activity, respirations by chest and abdominal excursion, body and leg movements, and nasal and mouth air flow are also monitored throughout the study.

Referring Physician and Diagnosis

  • The referring physician will receive a full account of the patient’s diagnosis and the recommended plan of management in order to maintain the highest level of continuity.
  • The referring physician, rather than the Sleep Disorders Center of Northeast Arkansas, will generally carry on any necessary long-term management of the patient. In certain cases, the center will manage patients in consultation with the referring physician.

Treatment of Sleep Disorders

  • Most sleep disorders may be effectively treated once they have been accurately diagnosed. However, different problems require different treatment approaches.
    • In some situations, treatment may be necessary.
    • Other situations may require a change in daily habits or working habits or working hours.
    • When sleep apnea is present, weight loss, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) or Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BPAP) may be necessary to diminish the serious health risks associated with this problem.
  • It is important to emphasize that correct treatment can be undertaken only after the underlying cause has been accurately diagnosed. Most sleep-wake disorders can be treated or managed effectively once they are accurately diagnosed.

Accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine(AASM).
